September's Class Book:
The Important Thing About Friends
In September, the class was introduced to the parts of a book (the Cover, the Title, the Author and Illustrator
and their functions). They also learned about the writing and publishing processes by creating their own class book.
We patterned our story after Margaret Wise Brown's book The Important Book, and narrowed our focus to friends to
coincide with our All About Me and My Friends unit.
The students worked on brainstorming ideas, adding detail, editing and making their pictures match their
text. The resulting book, "The Important Thing About Friends" was copied and handed out to local businesses with waiting
rooms for customers to read the finished text. A copy was also given to the local library for the children's department.
